Majestic Masood leads derby rout

BOURNE moved to the top of the Lincolnshire Premier League by beating arch-rivals Market Deeping at Outgang Road on Saturday.

The 111-run demolition of Deeping was Bourne's seventh win in eight matches and with the previous leaders Skegness losing at Louth, Bourne moved into top spot.

Their victory was helped in no small part by Pakistani all-rounder Fahad Masood's unbeaten 110.

Masood also closed the game by claiming the final wicket of Deeping captain David Gillett (48), five and a half overs before the end.

But it wasn't all a one-man show. Charlie Hopkins claimed three scalps for just 38 runs, dismissing Deeping opener Gary Yeales for 12 and the Kearns brothers Michael and Charlie within three balls for six and a duck respectively.

Nick Cowley offered some resistance to the Bourne attack, making 35 before being caught by Masood off the bowling of Will Clough but Deeping's run rate never matched Bourne's - and that was due in a big way to Masood's powerful batting towards the end of the Bourne innings.

He batted cautiously in the early stages but let loose later on adding 86 in just eight overs for the ninth wicket alongside Tom Lindley (17no).

Masood blasted four sixes and 12 fours. He was fortunate when one leading edge flew over the short long-on boundary but otherwise he struck the ball clean and true, even when employing the reverse sweep.

Cliff Spinks added 52 in an innings which included seven fours and two sixes but elsewhere Bourne's batsmen failed to settle.

Clough ran himself out on 9, Conrad Louth was clean bowled by Charlie Kearns for 9 and Bourne skipper Peter Morgan was caught by his brother Jamie off the bowling of Lee Peacock for 4 as Bourne made 278-8.

Deeping's reply began miserably with Hopkins' trio of wickets and they were eventully dismissed for 178.

Bourne are now in their best position since 2000 and 2001 when they won the competition but club chairman Hedley Stroud urged a note of caution.

He said: "There is a long way to go. This season has proved that any side can beat any other.

"After this week we have five away games including Bracebridge and Skegness and those will be particularly tough."

Bourne play Louth at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday while title rivals Skegness and Bracebridge face each other.
