Late goal knocks Wakes out of cup
BOURNE Town boss Martin Lakin said his side were hit by two late hammer blows as they crashed out of the League Cup at Abbey Lawn.
The United Counties League Premier league side were beaten by AFC Kempston, next to bottom in Division One, despite being ahead twice.
Lakin said Bourne started the game well and were comfortably in control for long periods in the first half.
Striker Ian Dunn made the breakthough just before half-time to send them in ahead at the break.
But Saimir Guri levelled for Kempston after 71 minutes, somewhat against the run of play.
Lakin said his side responded well, Dunn heading in from a corner just six minutes later to make it 2-1. But two late goals from Kempston completed a stunning turnaround at Abbey Lawn.
Lakin said: "We were in control but right at the end a shot struck my goalkeeper's chest, we didn't react and it was 2-2.
"That was a real hammer blow but I still felt we would be okay in extra time.
"Then we half cleared a corner in the 94th minute, the ball was pumped back into our box and we were out.
"We really took out eye off the prize at 2-2 but we have good players here and we will bounce back.
"We conceded late on against Boston too and it's something we cannot make a habit off."
Kempston now move in to the quarter finals after their late fight-back.
The Bedfordshire team's late goals game from, first, Nyran Vaughan, and then Kofi Schulz.
The result comes as a massive blow for the Wakes, who have lost four in a row since their run of three straight wins came to an abrupt end at Winterton Rangers on October 21.
