Lakin furious after derby drubbing

WAKES boss Martyn Lakin described his side's defending as "inept" after a dismal display at the Abbey Lawn on Tuesday evening.

Bourne fought back to level the match after Stamford side Blackstones took a first half lead but the Wakes conceded four sloppy goals to hand victory to their visitors.

Lakin said: "We were inept defensively. Four out of five of their goals came from set pieces and that is unforgiveable."

Bourne were looking to build on Saturday's 3-2 win against bottom side Raunds Town and Lakin said warning signs were talked about after that match.

He said: "We conceded similar goals on Saturday against Raunds. We talked about it before the game and at half time. It was sloppy defending.

"A few players have got into the habit of ball-watching and it's something we shall focus on."

Chances were few and far between in a fairly even first half in which Bourne had a shot cleared off the line.

Bourne went behind on the half hour. Richard Jones was unchallenged to head Kevin Ainslie's free kick back across the goal and in off the post.

The Wakes came out looking stronger after the break and quickly levelled.

A spell of neat, short passes resulted in a corner which Rob Masters headed home at the near post.

Bourne looked likely to take the game to Blackstones but inexplicably let in four goals as players failed to concentrate at the Stones' setpieces.

Left back Kevin Ainslie's pinpoint corners and free kicks from the right troubled Bourne's defence and the visitors retook the lead on the hour when another inswinging Ainslie free-kick picked out Avelino Vieira to score with a close range header.

Just six minutes later Ainslie's corner was headed back across goal by Carl Bird to Vieira, who had the simplest of finishes from inside the six yard box.

The Wakes' best chances came in a late rally after substitues Ian Dunn and Sam Kirton came on, but with two more goals in the final ten minutes Bourne's hopes of getting anything from the game were dead and buried well before the final whistle.

Stones' fourth goal came from an 82nd minute corner that Mark Jones volleyed in and, with three minutes remaining, Adam Scotcher centred for an unmarked Vieira to round Jarman and tap into an empty net.

Lakin will address the Wakes' frailties when defending setpieces at training and said: "5-1 is an embarrassing result.

"Somebody, between our defenders and keeper, must make sure people are marked. These were headers in the six yard box."

But he insists the squad is slowly improving, saying: "Between us we have done a good job on a shoestring budget.

"We are still two or three players short but Adam Jackson has done well, Addie Staffieri has been a revelation and we have missed Sam Kirton in recent games on the left side of midfield.

"But we have to get results against the teams around us (like Blackstones) and below us."

Bourne: Dan Jarman, Owen Smith, Marc Day (Ian Dunn), Nathan Stainfield, Tony Brooks (Sam Kirton), Stacy Cartwright, Addie Staffieri, Giulliano Staffieri, Rob Masters, Keith Gray, Adam Jackson.
