Lakin expects glut of players

WAKES boss Martyn Lakin is expecting around 50 players to report to pre-season training on Tuesday as he plots to revitalise the squad.

The Bourne Town supremo has worked tirelessly over the summer in a bid to tempt top talent to the Abbey Lawn.

But he has been dealt a hammer blow by four key players, who all look set to join former Wakes assistant Jay Harrison at UCL Premier Division rivals Sleaford Town.

Midfield maestro Andy Toyne, top scorer Miles Hunter, pacey winger Sam Kirton and livewire frontman Tom Siddons are all expected to make the short trip up the A15.

Lakin said: “It’s obviously a massive disappointment to lose those guys. I wanted Jay and the players to stay, but they have made their decision and I have to respect that.

“I have personally contacted around 50 players over the summer, and at least 35 of them have indicated that they will join us for pre-season training.

“Obviously other clubs are also in the market for talent, so we have to do our best to sell the club to some of them.”

Three key players from last season that needed little convincing to to stay put are stalwart defender Aaron Ridout, combative midfielder Dan Mason and club captain Ian Dunn.

Lakin added: “I’m delighted that Ian will stay on as club captain, he’s pivotal to my plans.

“Dan enjoyed an excellent season last time around and I am pleased to keep him, while Aaron has been superb for the club for a number of seasons.

“I think a lot of people will be impressed with the calibre of player we will have training with us.”

The Wakes will be put through their paces for a three week training spell in pre-season, with Lakin utilising the facilities at Spalding’s Gleed Boys School, where he teaches.

They will then kick off a spree of friendly fixtures at Long Sutton Athletic on July 11, before an eye-catching home clash with a Boston United XI on July 21.

Bourne then host Peterborough Premier Division sides Moulton Harrox (July 25) and Pinchbeck United (August 1).

They have also been handed a tough home clash with big-spending St Neots Town in the first round of the UCL Knockout Cup.

Lakin said: “It’s nice to have three home fixtures in pre-season. We’re mindful that the fans didn’t have any friendlies at the Abbey Lawn last season, so it’d be good to see them this year.”

Lakin has also appointed former Spalding United, Holbeach United and Boston Town man Ian Shooter as one of his right-hand men and is currently chasing a second assistant with experience in the UCL.

l Any local players who think they have what it takes to try out for the club are welcome to contact Martyn Lakin on 07788 101127.

l Bourne are in urgent need of match-day volunteers to help with the smooth running of the club after the retirement of Colin Needham after many years of loyal service. The role includes putting up nets and corner flags, collecting gate money and selling raffle tickets.
