Injury blow ends Staffieri's season

THE Wakes will be without top scorer Addie Staffieri for the rest of the season following a horrific injury during Saturday's 4-2 defeat to Daventry Town.

Staffieri dislocated his knee during the first half and was rushed to hospital for immediate treatment.

Bourne boss Martyn Lakin said: "He is on crutches. There may be tendon and ligament damage - Addie is out for the rest of the season.

"I did not see the incident but you can tell when a player is hurt."

Bourne were losing 1-0 at the time and with Stacy Cartwight unable to play due to a suspected wrist injury, and striker Ian Dunn recently transferred to Blue Square South side St Albans, Lakin was forced into a desperate reshuffle against one of the league's title favourites.

The Wakes had not travelled with a full bench of substitutes and Lakin said: "Defender Guiliano is Addie's brother and went to hospital with him. Keith Gray came on, I put our keeper (Lee Drury) up as centre forward and I came on in goal.

"We had started to have a good spell. Then the game was held up for 40 minutes.

"The lads responded brilliantly. If they show that level of desire over the rest of the season we will be fine."

Their opponents Daventry Town have only lost once all season and extended their lead to two before recent signing Lee Orrey beat the defence and scored to pull one back before half time.

In the second half Daventry scored two more times before Adam Jackson reduced the arrears.

Bourne felt they should have had a penalty when Orrey appeared to be brought down in the box, but Daventry, Lakin admitted, are a good side.

"They have a nucleus of athletes who are very good footballers. They were extremely well drilled.

"But we put in some good performances. Adam Jackson and Nathan Stainsfield were both excellent."

On Tuesday Bourne shared the points with Sleaford as each team scored from the spot.

The Wakes took the lead in the final minute of the first half with Adam Jackson on target, but Sleaford drew level after 65 minutes with Miles Hunter converting a penalty.

Lakin is now looking to strengthen his depleted squad and said: "Losing Addie will have a massive effect on a club as small as ours.

"Having also seen Ian Dunn leave we're very short of options now. We'll be relying on Lee Orrey to play a big role for us and I'll have to make some calls."

On Dunn's departure to a club three leagues higher, Lakin added: "Ian was just starting to fire on all cylinders for us but you have to take the opportunities when they come and he scored a couple of goals on his debut.

"But I can't speak highly enough of my team. We have one of the smallest budgets in the league but continue to mix it with the big boys."

Bourne, who sit fifth from bottom but with games in hand, are at home to Northampton Spencer tomorrow (3pm) and Rothwell Corinthians visit the Abbey Lawn on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

Bourne (v Daventry): Lee Drury, Adam Jackson, Nathan Stainfield, Owen Smith, Tony Brooks, Giulliano Staffieri (Martyn Lakin), Tony Pascu, Chris Parr, Rob Masters, Lee Orrey, Addie Staffieri (Keith Gray).
