Ladies crumble in physical challenge
Bourne Deeping Ladies 0 Louth 2
BOURNE’S first league match back since Christmas proved a tough fixture against a physical Louth side.
Despite a 4-0 victory to BDHC ladies at home in the sides’ first meeting, Louth had a strong record at home and the game proved to be as difficult as expected.
Louth relied on a few key players who set up numerous chances but when Bourne Deeping had possession their game flowed well with fantastic passing, particularly down the right where Emily Ostler, Maddie Burch and Kate McShane showed brilliant teamwork.
Louth made the most of a good opportunity to lead 1-0 at half time and the second started badly for the visitors who conceded a second from a short corner, sealing their victory.
Despite a disappointing result, Bourne Deeping showed great resilience and played some of their best hockey all season. Sue Oakley and Emily Ostler’s committed performances earned them a shared player of the match title.
BDHC: Katie Woodward, Sian Jones, Jan Havemann, Becky Allam, Emily Ostler, Jenny Tuffin, Sue Oakley, Natasha Newitt, Maddie Burch, Kate McShane, Camilla Smith.
l BOURNE Deeping Ladies 2nds beat an understrength Cambridge City 4ths 5-2.
With only eight players, the Cambridge side were always going to have to struggle but they put up a fantastic fight.
Isia Jasinska scored early on but Cambridge pulled level with a breakaway goal to leave the sides level at half time.
City began to flag in the second half and BDHC scored twice before the Cambridge side added their second. But Bourne Deeping added to their tally to settle the game.
Jasinska added to her tally after the interval, while Laura Thomson-Wright (twice) and Eirfar Mustafa added their names to the scoresheet.
BDHC 2nd: Phillipa Wheeler, Laura Thomson-Wright, Kat Kennedy, Hazel Williams, Amy Ewing, Eve Cooke, Isia Jasinska, Francesca Lyon, Eirfar Mustafa, Caroline Geddes, Rhiannon Jones.
Bourne Deeping 3 Wisbech 3rd 1
BOURNE Deeping got back to winning ways after a stalemate a week earlier, beating Wisbech 3-1 on Saturday.
But they had to come from behind after Tim Beaver’s 357 minutes without conceding at home came to an unspectacular end when a bobbled short corner strike which was going wide hit Andy Briault’s foot and went in.
The Dragons came out in the second half with more purpose and Briault slotted home an equaliser .
The goal lifted the team and they began to push Wisbech back. A short corner was fired point blank at Kind who guided the ball home to take the lead and as spaces started to appear in the tiring Wisbech defence and Alex Glover, on the reverse stick, made it 3-1.
BDHC: Tim Beaver, Jason Purllant, Andy Briault, Peter Jeffery, John Plant, Ali Rowledge, Phil Arnold, Tommy Stopper, Chris Clarkson, Nick Glover, Alex Glover, Andy Kind
Horncastle 4 BDHC 2nd 2
THE Dragons’ second team began well on Saturday with Neil Burford back from injury and Will Epsom playing his first second team game.
They took the lead from a right wing cross neatly deflected in by Mike Gregson. Bourne Deeping had chances to increase their lead but were frustrated by good goalkeeping and a slippery pitch.
Epsom and Ash Stretton linked well in midfield but as the game became more open, BDHC conceded two breakaway goals.
BDHC fought back and Epsom scored a debut goal but the Dragons were unable to push on for victory.
BDHC 2nd: Will Anderson, Simon Wilmot, Graham Brewer, Phil Tokens, Stewart Dacre, Will Epsom, Ash Stretton, Kevin Baker, Chris Mann, Mike Gregson, Shane Carlton, Henry Winfield – Chislett, Neil Burford.
Cambridge City 5th 0 BDHC 3rd 4
The Dragons were very rusty in the first ten minutes but after warming up, their form returned.
They took the lead when Andrew Vartan buried the ball past the keeper after a great piece of individual skill.
A reformed Cambridge side came out much stronger in the second half.
They soon had their first real chance at goal but it was saved by Joe Wray with a one-on-one sliding stick save.
In response, the Dragons started to play some excellent hockey, switching the ball from left to right through pivot man Ben Walden. Josh Oakley created the next goal with some superb skill between himself and Lewis Stedman, leaving Harry Oakley able to slap the ball into the back of the goal.
Immediately after, the Dragons struck again with Brad Mansfield making a great interception to win a short corner, which was converted by Walden.
The Dragons did not stop there. They soon created more chances with Mansfield denied by the goalkeeper five times in the space of ten minutes.
After a series of short corners, Andrew Vartan smashed the ball past the goalkeeper for the final goal.
