Football: Wakes start to take shape

BOURNE beat Whatton United in their final pre-season game at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday.

Boss Darren Munton, who has begun a massive rebuilding programme at the club, was delighted the 4-2 scoreline but said: "This was more about the performance than the result but we seem to have found the right balance and the lads are looking forward to the start of the season.

"We were two up and looked comfortable but then gave away two silly goals."

Stu Lambie scored Bourne's first with a right foot strike into the bottom corner and Glen Spearink doubled the lead, cutting in from the right hand side before firing home.

But Bourne let their visitors level before half time. One of the goals was an own goal from Arron Jesson, which Munton put down to a "lack of communication".

An individual effort from Richard Nelson restored Bourne's lead. Nelson took on two players before finding the back of the net. Luke Enderwick headed down into the bottom corner for Bourne's fourth.

Former Rutland Ranger Nelson will be missing from Saturday's opening league tie, but Jamie Forbes who also moved from Rutland in the summer, will be available before a suspension kicks in on August 21.

Munton will have striker Liam Palmer available for selection and said: "We have a number of options."

Wakes: M Walklin, J Gough, A Jesson, D Smith, S Lambie, K Gray, R Nelson, D Mason, J Forbes, A Brockbank, G Spearink. Subs: L Enderwick, S Hood, T Cardall, K Butler.

The Wakes begin their league campaign at Olney tomorrow. The reserves start with a tricky opening fixture at last year's champions, St Neots.
