Wittering’s assent up the leagues in recent years has been simply remarkable and in their first game in the PDFL Division One they impressed in a 3-1 win over Stamford Belvederes in front of a crowd of 314 as part of Groundhop weekend.
It was a first outing in division one for both sides, as Bels were also promoted at the end of last season via the play-offs.
Both sides showed early attacking intent and it was Wittering who took the lead in the 17th minute when Ashley Middleton beat Stamford keeper Richy Pozella with a looping header.
However that only spurred Bels on more and Lee Conneely went agonisingly close with a drive which bounced back off the bar.
However Wittering were a threat in the air and Ross Lockwood got up highest to direct the ball into the back of the Bels’ net for 2-0. But the action was not done before the break with Bels halving the arrears from the penalty spot through debutant Jamie Saddington.
The penalty looked harsh on Wittering but Stamford were not going to let that stop them and they came out after the break looking to get back on even terms.
Wittering, who had controlled the midfield in the first half, were coming under pressure but Bels could not get the goal they needed.
Wittering could finally breath a little easier with 14 minutes left to play when a low free-kick from Middleton fell at the feet of Josh Watson who made no mistake.
Bels thought they had scored through Jason Wardle late on but Wittering’s well drilled defence caught him and the hosts offside.
