Timing of transfers is a setback for Bourne boss
Wakes boss Darren Munton revealed the scale of his disappointment over mid-season transfers involving his players this week.
Bourne have lost the services of skipper Dan Smith who has joined Peterborough Northern Star; and Munton may lose top scorer Ben Easson to Blackstones who tabled an approach late last week.
The departures follow the exit of Alec Robinson who was picked off by Boston Town just as Munton had guided his side to mid-table in the United Counties League First Division.
“It’s knocked the stuffing out of me,” said Munton. “I sat down and wondered if it’s worth it.
“I am bit disillusioned. I could not imagine being anywhere other than Bourne but I will have a look at it at the end of the season.”
The Bourne boss had recently strengthened his side with the arrival of Tom Walmsley from Deeping Rangers and the addition of John Feetham and Jamie Forbes as midweek cover.
He added: “It’s a big blow losing Dan. We had hoped he would stick it out to the end of the season but we cannot offer what they can.
“It’s very frustrating. The teams they are going to are not really offering title hopes.”
The wakes boss admitted he has been hugely frustrated by the timing of the moves.
He said: “Dan has been a good servant for Bourne since the U18s. It’s a step up for him and you can’t knock him for that - it’s just the timing.”
Seb Hood is Smith’s logical replacement in the centre of defence when Bourne play Bugbrooke St Michaels at the Abbey Lawn tomorrow.
It will be their first game since Janary 12. Saturday’s league match at Buckingham was postponed because of snow, and Tuesday’s Hinchingbrooke Cup tie at home to Deeping Rangers cancelled due to an unplayable surface.
“The pitch was in a terrible state even before the snow,” said Munton.
Kick off at the Abbey Lawn tomorrow is at 3pm.
Bourne Town Reserves travel to play Burton Park Wanderers Reserves tomorrow afternoon.
l Bourne are seeking sponsors and volunteers to help support off the pitch. Anybody interested should contact the club directly.
