Stamford School’s 1st XI hockey team continued their exploits on the road in the U18s’ Plate this week, winning 3-2 against Felsted for a place in the quarter-finals.
Stamford comfortably started the better of the two teams and were rewarded with the first set-piece of the game, after strong running down the right.
Centre-back James Dodworth flicked low into the right corner to put the visitors 1-0 up.
Felsted’s responded with vigour and in the 15th minute a direct ball from outside Stamford’s 23 reached a highforward, who coolly rounded Dan Sproul to equalise.
A determined Stamford pressed well, allowing short corners to be gained however and it took until the 29th minute for Stamford to re-establish their lead.
Good work down the right by Thomas MacDonald allowed the ball to be pulled back for Jamie Richardson to score his 30th of the term.
Inside right Laurence Sidwell, made it 3-1, two minutes after with a trademark thunder-bolt from the top of the D.
The second half saw chances come and go for both sides with neither side taking the initiative.
Moments of goalkeeping brilliance by Dan Sproul, saw Felsted get more frustrated and gung-ho in their play in the dying embers of the game. Felsted grabbed a second with 2 minutes to go.
Stamford School 1st XI will play either Woodbridge or Chigwell School next week in the quarter-finals of the U18s HA Plate.
