Rangers find no way past stalemate

Newport Pagnell will probably be happy with the point picked up at Outgang Road after adrawing with Deeping Rangers on Saturday.

Pagnell received an 8-2 hammering from Rangers earlier in the season and arepeat of that scoreline was never liekly.

The rematch proved to be a tight encounter which, despite the goalless scoreline, kept the crowd interested right to the end.

The Buckinghamshire side set out as if they had a score to settle and Ash Farmer was the first to spurn a goalscoring opportunity early on.

He was closely followed by Ranger’s Burton-Jones who missed the target by a whisker as both sides enjoyed an equal share of possession.

Rangers had the best of the chances during the opening half. Alex Beck struck an effort over McAdoo’s crossbar on 20 minutes. Shortly after, Lewis Stone put in an excellent cross from the left which managed to evade all the Newport defenders, only for the ball to miss the outstretched boots of both Beck and Ash Stevens who had done well to dodge their markers.

Pagnell’s lively number 11, Jared Cuniffe, was a danger throughout the game with his mazy runs and just before the break he beat two Rangers defenders before shooting harmlessly over James Doughty’s goal.

As has often been the case this season, Rangers played better during the second half and Lewis Stone almost put them ahead, via a Newport defenders legs. He drove the ball in from an angle only to see the ball bounce off the player and into the side netting.

Doughty came to the rescue for the home side with a brilliant reflex save from Cuniffe on 75 minutes, at which point the game was still very much in the balance.

With the clock ticking down, Ranger’s manager ,Tuncay Korkmaz, made a last throw of the dice, making a triple substitution but despite all the changes, Ranger’s just could not break Newport down.

The closing stages saw Steve Julian’s powerful effort from close range saved point blank by McAdoo, and Burton-Jones narrowly headed over but neither side made a breakthrough.

Deeping Rangers: Doughty, Tinkler, Jackson, Ashton, Julian, Holt, Lambley (Hands), Burton-Jones, Beck (Stebbings), Stevens, Stone (Deane). Subs not used: Bull, Evans.

M-o-M: James Doughty.
