Bourne Town would have been hoping for a victory at home to Peterborough Sports last night, with the visitors without a win on their travels so far this season.
But a lack lustre performance by the Wakes saw them lose 3-0 at the Abbey Lawn to drop them down to 15th and take Sports up to second in the table.
The first game since the departure of prolific striker Jezz Goldson-Williams to Deeping Rangers might have offered the opportunity for others to shine.
Yet they didn’t take the chance and never made much of an effort either.
Bourne looked lightweight at time and were forced to defend for long periods while Sports patiently passed the ball around.
It took just six minutes to open the scoring as Dan Fountain’s corner was flicked on for Daniel Clements to head home at the far post.
Ryan Wood’s low finish made it 2-0 and a spectacular 35-yard thunderbolt from Fountain put the result beyond doubt.
Clements came close to another goal when his header was tipped over by Aaron Fagan midway through the second half.
Bourne’s first real effort came with 14 minutes to go through substitute Jones De Souza and in stoppage-time Henry Dunn’s free-kick crashed off the crossbar.
However, it was too little, too late by Bourne who needed to make a bright start.
