Bourne Town have been handed a huge boost ahead of the 2016/17 season with the news star striker Zak Munton will play for the club again this season.
The news comes as a real boost to new Wakes manager Jimmy McDonnell, who led the club as manager for the first time on Saturday when they were beaten 5-2 by a strong Peterborough Sports outfit who won promotion from the UCL Division One, the league Bourne play in, last season.
Munton scored 25 goals for the Wakes last season and was named player of the season at the end of term awards. There has been plenty of interest in the teenager, and he played in an open training game as a trialist for Stamford AFC last weekend, but with regular game time guaranteed, and his father Darren the club co-chairman ,he has agreed to commit to Bourne for another season.
Munton was close to giving Bourne the lead early on Saturday when he chipped Sports keeper Luke McShane with a beautiful piece of skill but he was forced to watch the ball bounce back off the bar with the stopper stranded.
Bourne did take the lead through George Couzens but Mark Jones levelled for the visitors to the Abbey Lawn, which has also been getting a make-over during the off-season, when he scored on the volley from a free-kick from former Daniels midfielder Dan Lawlor.
Jones doubled his and his side’s tally with a nice finish into the bottom corner after a show of strength to make it 2-1 at the break.
Both sides rang the changes for the second half.
Olly Medwynter made it 3-1 to the visitors as action resumed and Avelino Vieira scored from the penalty spot shortly after.
Bourne pulled a goal back with a header by Tom Goslin from a left wing cross, but Karl Gibbs completed the scoring for Sports with a diving header.
Wakes manager McDonnell tweeted after the game: “Very good session from Bourne Town against a top side in Peterborough Sports. [I am] very pleased with performance early door, good fitness, good start.”
One thing Bourne are doing brilliantly of late is keeping their top performing talent at the club and that includes in the dug out.
The manager of the Wakes’ league winning U18s team Steve Bills will step up to lead Bourne Reserves this year, as the club continue to develop young players.
