‘Go out there and enjoy it’ will be Bourne Town boss Jimmy McDonnell’s message to his young side this season.

The Wakes will make an early start to the campaign as part of the Groundhop Weekend which features eight games.

Bourne face a 10.30am kick-off on Sunday away to Bugbrooke St Michaels in Division One of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League.

Having finished fifth last season and kept the squad together this summer, Bourne are looking for the same again.

McDonnell said: “We’re all looking forward to the first day of the season.

“We are pretty much how we were last time with just a couple of new faces and we’re trying to bring in a couple of signings as well.

We are not putting any pressure on them. We want them to go out and enjoy it then look back at the end of the season and say they have had a good time.

“We will have a first-team squad of 24 so some of them will play for the reserves and we will promote players if they are doing well.

“Players will move around to get plenty of games because we don’t want anybody sitting on the bench for eight weeks.

“We will give a chance to all the young lads. We know they will run all day so it’s all about speed and movement rather than playing direct or being physical.

“We are not putting any pressure on them. We want them to go out and enjoy it then look back at the end of the season and say they have had a good time.

“Of course, you enjoy it so much more if you are at the right end of the league table.

“Last season was the first time in probably 10 years for Bourne to have a good season.

“We want to do everything properly and pre-season has gone well.

“When I was playing we were never fit enough to play at this level.

“So we’ve done a lot of cardio work and sessions in the gym as well as training and warm-up matches.

“We are such a tight-knit group anyway but to be honest it has been an eye-opener for me when you sign forms and ask for the player’s date of birth or sing happy birthday when he’s turned 18!

“I’m enjoying the role and I wanted us to play teams from a level above us.

“We knew when they got the ball we would have to work hard and then try to keep it when they are closing down quicker than they will do in our league.”
