Cottesmore Amateurs pleased their manager at both ends of the park on Saturday as they kept their first clean sheet of the season and put three goals past Allexton & New Parks to win at a very windy Rogues Park.
Playing against a fierce wind in the first half Cottesmore managed to go in at 0-0 at half time knowing they had done the hard work.
And so it proved; after the break John Lowe, Jordan Smith and Luke Smith struck for the home side who had great success exploiting the wide channels.
Cottesmore Amateurs manager Neil Miller said his side have been showing the right signs in the last couple of weeks without getting the results, including in their 2-0 exit from the quarter-finals of the Leicestershire and Rutland Senior Cup at the hands of Oakham last week. He said: “Going back to the Oakham game we didn’t do much wrong. If we can keep that mentality then we can beat most teams in the league and can be pushing for the top six.
“I am delighted with the result but I am more delighted with the clean sheet. Gav Shaw in goal had a couple of saves to make but it was a good concentrated effort by the defence. There was good ball retention and good recycling of the ball.
“To get a clean sheet was great. We have been conceding two goals a game on average this season so to a clean sheet is massive for the back five.
“It’s tough when you are trying to get out of your own box but when you kick the ball it only goes ten yards because of the wind.”
However Cottesmore did well with the wind at their backs and the first goal was assisted by the conditions. Amateurs won a corner and Jordan Smith swung it in on a wide arc and a blast of wind caught the ball and sent it into the net.
The second goal came from a raid down the flank with full back Sam Wright and Andre Fontura combining, the striker playing as a winger, crossed the ball in for Luke Smith to finish.
Ten minutes from time John Love was on the spot to put away a rebound from a Jordan Smith shot for 3-0.
Amateurs currently sit in 11th position in the 17 team Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division with a tough away day to fourth place Blaby & Whetstone coming up on Saturday.
