Bourne boss says there is still room for improvement despite big victory

Bourne Town 4 Raunds Town 0

The Wakes didn’t look like team that had only picked up one point in six games before this contest but boss Darren Munton says they must still tighten up.

Munton said: “I’m happy with the result but performance-wise we still have to improve.

“Against the better sides we would have been punished.”

In front of a good bank holiday crowd they attacked from the first whistle creating chance after chance in the opening 20 minutes. They took just six minutes to open the scoring with Jason Kilbride converting Jake Mason’s cross to give Bourne the perfect start to the new year.

Kilbride swiftly doubled The Wakes’ lead converting from the penalty spot three minutes later after Moulton Harrox loan player Steve Matsin was brought down in the area.

Bourne, who have endured a difficult autumn, then wobbled a little and were pressed back by Raunds for the final 25 minutes of the first half. But second half strikes from Glenn Spearink put the result beyond doubt. Both goals came from well timed passes beyond the Raunds defence.

Munton added: “We had so many chances in the first 20 minutes that if we had scored four or five there could have been no complaints. But for the next 25 we panicked at the back and failed to clear our lines.

“It was comical at times and it is no wonder we have conceded so many in previous games but fortunately we rode our luck.”

With goalkeepers Dan Jarman and Arron Bellairs unavailable, Munton handed Matt Gilson his first team debut after he had impressed during the reserves 2-1 defeat at the hands of Eynesbury Rovers Reserves on Saturday. A second solid perfromance in three days has not given Munton a headache of the right kind - which keeper to field at Burton Park Wanderers on Saturday.

“Gilson looked good and did nothing wrong in goal,” said Munton. “He has come in and taken his chance which gives me a selection problem of the right kind.”

He added: “There were quite a few there watching and it was good to put on a show.”

But while Munton now has a surplus of goalkeepers to choose from, he has a fresh vacancy to fill up front after Matsin confirmed he will return to Moulton Harrox this weekend.

The Bourne boss, who says he is “always” looking at new players said: “He looked sharp and was available while Moulton had no fixtures but he will be staying with them. He made it clear that would be the case so we have complaints and will hopefully be getting a few new lads in over the coming weeks.”

He added: “It has been tough at times but hopefully this will give the lads a boost. And it would be nice to get back-to-back wins.”

Bourne kick off at Burton Park Wanderers at 2pm tomorrow while the reserves play Bugbrooke St Michaels Reserves away at 3pm.

Bourne: Matt Gilson, John Currall, Tom Cardall, Andy Moss, Dan Smith, Aaron Jesson, Dan Mason (Craig Rook), Seb Hood (Alec Robinson), Jake Mason (Glenn Spearink), Steve Mastin, Jason Kilbride. Subs unused: Alex Brockbank, Ashley Firth.
