Football: Rangers make it five wins in a row

DEEPING Rangers returned to action after the winter lay-off with a 2-0 home win against S&L Corby.

Saturday's victory completes Rangers' double over the Corby side and means Rangers have now won five on the run.

Manager Pat Rayment said: "I can't praise the players enough. We battered them for 90 whole minutes. It was a very solid all-round performance.

"It is the first time we have managed to win five matches in a row and I feel sure it is down to hard work."

Rangers took the lead through a 23rd minute own goal. Ben Greasley turned a John-Paul Duncliffe cross into his own net and Mark Paul's 14th goal of the season, just 11 minutes later, wrapped up the win for Rayment's men.

The visitors' best chance of the game came in the first period but Rangers' keeper Danny Bircham spread himself to narrow the angle, forcing the striker to attempt a chip, which landed on top of the net.

Deeping should have added to their tally on the hour mark when Richard Lavin, rushing out of the visitor's goal, gave a free kick away. Mark Paul took the free kick but blasted his shot high over the bar.

Late in the game Lavin made amends when he was on hand to rescue his side.

He saved a Stevenson effort but failed to hold the ball, which fell at the feet of Mark Paul. Lavin managed to recover and scramble the ball away off the line.

Rangers now sit third in the UCL Premier Division but have played more games than anyone else in the division.

Deeping Rangers: Danny Bircham, J P Duncliffe, Ben Porter, Matt Porter, Dan Holyoak, Michael Goode, Michael Stevenson, Spencer Tinkler ( Ollie Gale), Mark Paul ( Ashley Stevens), Sam Bettinson, Scott Musgrove. Sub not used: Danny Hussey.

The Vine Man of the Match: Michael Goode.
