Football: Forbes fires late goal to net opening success
A LATE goal from summer signing Jamie Forbes won all three points for The Wakes in their league opener at Olney Town.
Bourne won 4-3 as they began life in the United Counties First Division with a side rebuilt over the summer by new boss Darren Munton.
The Bourne squad was made up of eight of last season's reserves, bolstered by a handful of shrewd signings amd lads returning from university. Keith Gray is the only player from last season's first team to have stood by following demotion at the end of last season for failing to meet new ground requirements.
Munton could not be at the game but was in close contact with his assistant Phil Jarman and the pair were delighted with their league start.
Munton said: "I can't ask for more from the boys. Away from home, three points is always good.
"It's something to build on after a difficult pre-season, which was hit and miss.
"It's a step up for many of the players but they are quite capable of playing at this level. Dan Smith, Jason Gough and Dan Jarman have all played at this level before."
It took just 11 minutes for Bourne to take a deserved lead with a superbly placed turn and drive from new signing, Alex Brockbank, who stunned the home team and supporters with his assured finish.
Resolute defending, marshalled by skipper Dan Smith and Jason Gough ensured the visitors went into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
Summer signing from Rutland Rangers and man of the match, Stuart Lambie was at the centre of the action, linking with the forwards and supporting the defence at crucial times throughout a frenetic 90 minutes.
Bourne added to their tally on 52 minutes when Smith ghosted into the box to firmly head across the target, beating the home keeper inside his far post.
The response from Olney was to pile on the pressure, a fierce drive from close quarters got them onto the score sheet.
Against the run of play, Liam Palmer with, possibly only his second touch calmly extended Bourne's lead with a fine finish from just inside the box, 3-1 with 15 minutes to play but any illusions of a comfortable win were soon dispelled.
Under sustained pressure from Olney, Dan Jarman in the Bourne goal made two smart saves, a near post parry and spreading himself as a player stormed into the box, one-on-one, but the home side levelled the score with two well-worked goals in quick succession.
A point would have been a good result as the minutes ticked down but as Olney scented a late winner, it was Bourne who took the spoils when Jamie Forbes supported the Bourne front-runners to slot the ball home with his left well into time added on.
Bourne's first home game of the season is at the Abbey Lawn at 3pm tomorrow when they face ON Chenecks.
Bourne Town: Dan Jarman, Johnnie Currell, Ben Canny, Jason Gough, Dan Smith, Stu Lambie, Dan Mason (Seb Hood), Jamie Forbes, Alex Brockbank (Arron Jesson), Glenn Spearink (Liam Palmer) and Keith Gray. Sub not used, Luke Enderwick.
