Cycling: Ali secures title with a race to go
ALI Slater continues to dominate cycling's Be-Well Evening 10 league.
Slater raced to a convincing win over the Aslackby-based circuit in exactly 23 minutes. This was 1m36 quicker than Mark Botteley in second, who just edged the improving James Gelsthorpe by 18 seconds.
Slater's dominance this year has been so much that he has now won the club championship with a week to go and in so doing has broken Botteley's victory sequence record, which went back to 2005.
In the handicap competition, Anthony Gough has closed in on long time leader Tim Wigley, courtesy of a season's best time of 26m45.
Gough now trails by just a few points entering the season's finale on Wednesday and, with Wigley missing the event, a top three place should be enough to see Gough take the title although club chairman Gerald Bone is still in with a shout.
Slater also showed superb form in a 75 mile race in Belgium, racing as part of a British select squad against 160 riders.
He faced the cream of European juniors and had to contend with a course riddled with cobblestones as well as torrential rain. Refusing to be put off by the conditions, Ali finished 10th after his small breakaway trio were caught by a group late in the race.
After putting in an heroic effort Slater had nothing left in the tank for the sprint but a 10th place finish was an excellent result.
Bourne Wheelers will hold their annual sportive The Bourne Ultimatum on September 5.
A choice of distances are available but with the field limited to 100 riders places are running out fast.
Anyone interested in riding should check www.bournewheelers.co.uk for details.
