Bourne win after tie-breaks

BOURNE Tennis Club's mens 2nds squeezed out a narrow but valuable 5-4 win against Spilsby in their recent Lincolnshire league match.

Edward Whitfield and Marshall Hulse recovered from an unpromising start to find their feet with a convincing 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 sequence while Keith Wallace and Colin Pummel finished a good afternoon's work with 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 after being taken to a 10-5 tie-break following their opponents 1-6, 6-4.

Josh Smith and Douglas Main worked hard for little reward taking their opponents to a 4-10 tie-break in their second rubber after a battling 1-6, 7-5 but by then Bourne had done enough to win.

The men's 3rds returned from Boston on the wrong end of a narrow defeat by the odd rubber in nine.

Iain Ross and Josh Smith formed a strong partnership straight away and powered their way through with three straight wins 7-5, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.

This pairing looks to be a force for the future at the Bourne Club.

Another blend of youth and experience, Tim Bradley and Will Palmer, promised well ending with a spirited 10-6 tie-break in their favour while Nigel Bridgewater and Adam Vaughan took Boston to yet another tie-break after 2-6, 7-6 just missing out on the crucial rubber 8-10. Overall it was a heartening performance against always tough opposition.

Meanwhile the ladies 2nd team recorded a 6-3 victory at home to Spilsby.

No Bourne pair could come to terms with Spilsby's powerful first couple but elsewhere the home side had the upper hand.
