Bentley's final-ball four dumps out cup holders

Jaidka Cup Final

MARKET DEEPING lost to BOURNE by 2 wkts

BOURNE took the Jaidka Cup out of the hands of local rivals Market Deeping with the final ball of a thrilling game on Wednesday evening.

Tom Bentley was the Bourne hero as he struck the final ball of the match from Deeping skipper Nick Cowley for four, ending Deeping’s two-year hold on the trophy in dramatic fashion.

Bourne had required nine from the last over to pass Deeping’s 20-over total of 151-7 and three from the final delivery.

It was sweet revenge for the winners who had lost in the two previous finals to Deeping as well as in a Lincs Premier Division match as recently as Saturday.

They also answered skipper David Christmas’s call to make the most of the quick opportunity to redress the balance.

Christmas said: “I was pretty pleased that we were playing Deeping again so quickly as it gave us a chance to put it right.

“I thought we played well in the game on Saturday – it was just one person (Lee Peacock) who made the difference and took it away from us.

“There were opportunities in both finals for either side to win and Deeping took theirs better than we did.

“Deeping had plenty of self-belief and confidence, but we fought hard to make sure it was us who came out on top.”

And while the Jaidka Cup – once the jewel in the crown of local cricket – might not these days attract the bumper entry of years gone by, it is still a prestigious competition on the calendar.

Christmas added: “Although the numbers have reduced over the years, you only have to look at the teams involved to see that the Jaidka is still a competition that means something.

“It is nice to have the opportunity to play teams of this stature in 20-over cricket.”

David Gillett had batted superbly in making 76 for Deeping, while Tom Linley cracked 59 opening the batting for Bourne.

Bourne now travel to Nassington, who cruised to an eight-wicket success over understrength Barnack.
