ATHLETICS: Bourne young guns shine at county championships
The county championships showcased the ability of a host of talented young Bourne athletes at the weekend.
There were medals galore across a range of disciplines from town youngsters in the colours of Nene Valley Harriers at Grantham.
Star of the day with four wins was under 13 girl Emma Hornsby, who took the 100m in 13.9secs, the 200m in 28.1secs, the 70m hurdles in 12.0secs and the long jump with a superb leap of 4.67m to set a club and championship record.
There was a club and championship record shattered by under 20 boy Robert Mohan, who won the shot putt with a superb 15.67m throw.
It was another great day for the Hampson brothers. Alex (11) ran a fine personal best to win the under 13 boys' 1,500m in 5mins 01secs on Saturday while Ben took the 400m in the same age group in a PB of 57.8secs.
The following day, Alex claimed a championship best time of 2mins 24.3secs in winning the 800m while Ben lifted the under 15 800m crown with victory in 2mins 13.8secs.
James Thomas saved himself for Sunday's under 15 boys' 3,000m and produced a superb run to win a tough race in a new PB of 10mins 18secs.
Following on from Robert Mohan's shot putt glory the rest of the Mohan family also had plenty to celebrate in the field events.
His sister Jenna set a new club and championship best in the under 13 girls' discus when she won the event with an effort of 25.13m.
She also broke a club record with a javelin launch of 22.85m. Robert's brother, Adam, also had two fine wins, shattering the club record shot putt distance of 12.59m and setting a new PB in the discus of 41.08m.
Meanwhile, their mother Jackie was not to be outdone by the rest of the family, winning the veteran ladies' shot putt event with a club best 9.12m, as well as winning the discus with 26.40m.
Jade Carvath-Smith also had a double competition weekend - on Saturday she ran a PB in the under 15 girls' 1,500m in 5mins 18.2secs to gain fifth place and on Sunday, competing for the first time in the 3,000m, she celebrated an excellent second place in 11mins 29secs.
Ellis O'Connell ran a PB in the 800m of 2mins 40.8secs and also ran the 1,500m in 5.12.5 for the under 15 boys. Alex Hedley showed progress in the under 15 boys' 800m with a time of 2mins 50secs.
