THE Wakes took a valuable point from the visit of S&L Corby to the Abbey Lawn on Tuesday evening.
The 1-1 draw brought an end to a run of five straight league defeats but manager Martyn Lakin said he saw it as two points lost rather than one gained.

Bourne began brightly and with Addie Staffieri having the beating of the full back wide on the
right, and Tony Pascu heading over the bar from a clear position in front of goal, they could have taken an early lead.

But after 25 minutes, the visitors won a corner which fell to the feet of a Corby striker who put the ball in the net while five Bourne players were standing around doing nothing.

Bourne were still trailing at half time, but with 30 minutes to go, they were bombarding the Corby goal mouth, and Staffieri beat the full back to cut in from the right to the byline.

He crossed and Ian Dunn was on hand to head home.

Wakes took total control for the final 15 minutes and were unlucky to be refused a penalty when Staffieri was apparently pushed over in the box.

"We gave a debut to goalkeeper Lee Drury who had a very strong game, not putting a foot wrong all the way through," said Martyn Lakin.

"We have got to match the passion and commitment from last night when we take on St Neots on Saturday at the Abbey Lawn."

Saturday's fixture (kick off 3pm) will be tough against a side sitting second in the UCL premier with only three defeats all season. The reserves play St Neots Reserves away at the same time.

Wakes: Lee Drury, Owen Smith, Giulliano Staffieri, Nathan Stainfield, Tony Brooks (Rob Masters), Chris Parr, Addie Staffieri, Lee Orrey (Keith Gray), Ian Dunn, Tony Pascu, Adam Jackson.
