NEIL Thorpe resigned as Bourne Town boss after this uninspiring defeat on Saturday.

Danny Nicholls' second-half strike condemned the rock bottom Wakes to an 11th league games without a win.

Despite a string of heavy Abbey Lawn losses, a defeat against notoriously bad travellers is the most disappointing Wakes result to date.

Thorpe said: "I felt we dominated much of the first half and really should have got our noses in front.

"But I sensed a lack of belief in the dressing room at half time and we faded badly.

"The second half was a non-event and we offered very little."

Bourne made a bright start, with the lively Miles Hunter testing James Howarth in the Pagnell goal almost immediately.

It was Hunter who fashioned the best chance of the first period, weaving past two men before firing agonisingly wide from eight yards.

The former Sleaford Town man saw another effort saved minutes later, as the Wakes began to dominate.

But the visitors fired a warning shot just before the break. A sweeping break carved the home defence wide open – forcing Aaron Bellairs into a smart near-post save.

Bellairs was picking the ball out of his net eight minutes after the restart however, as Bourne flicked the self destruct button yet again.

Slack marking allowed Nicholls acres of space on the left-hand side of the box, and he coolly lobbed the advancing keeper.

This signalled a spell of Pagnell pressure, Adam Broome kicking a goalbound strike off the line.

Deposed skipper Aaron Ridout was also forced to make a last-ditch tackle to keep his side in the game.

Substitute Stuart King had Bourne's best chance to equalise, but his close-range header was comfortably saved.

The Wakes are by no means isolated at the bottom of the table, but have played more games than all of their rivals.

Wakes: Bellairs, Ridout, Gough, Glover, Hipkiss (King 44), Kirton, Cook (c), Broome, Toyne, Hunter, Stainsby. Subs not used: Edwards, Currall.
