Bourne-based cyclist Mark Botteley raced in his first triathlon of the year last weekend – the Southwell sprint race.
Competing against 500 other competitors, including several national championship medalists, Botteley placed an excellent ninth overall and won his age category.

After a solid swim (his weakest discipline), in which he recorded a time of 6.38mins for the 400 metres, he set off into the bike leg in 88th place.

A trademark fast ride, recording the fifth fastest split of all in 26.06 for the 11.5 miles, meant he entered the final phase – a three-mile run – in tenth place.

Botteley managed to overtake one more adversary on his way to a 16.51 run time and, added together to transition times, his overall time was 51.38.
