On behalf of Stamford Town Council I would like to thank everyone involved in making the Christmas Festival and Lights switch-on such a hugely successful and enjoyable day.

Special thanks are extended to Burghley Estates for their generous gift of a wonderful tree to adorn Red Lion Square; the amazing “action squad” from RAF Wittering for their enthusiastic involvement in the felling, delivery and installation of our special tree; the Kiwanis’ sleigh which helped transport Santa and, of course, the Lions for the Santa’s Grotto.

These same thanks are also due for the support of the British Legion, Messrs Hindmarch, All Saints Church, Ted Taylor and the great team of volunteer marshals and stewards who worked so hard both in the public eye and behind the scenes.

Stamford Town Council also wishes to express its enormous appreciation to all the performers who gave their time to provide such an entertaining and widely-enjoyed programme including - Jem’s Hip Hop, Handful of Harmonies, Handful of Harminies, Punch and Judy, Wildcats Theatre, Pennyless, Morris Dancers and Rutland Radio.

The children of Sir Malcolm Sargent and St Gilbert’s School, led by musical director Vicky Mills, truly ignited that special Christmas spirit with their joyful carol singing.

Stamford’s own Poet Laureate, Teresa Maclean, recited her specially composed verse and, with the help of the children, called on Santa to come along and visit the Square.

The magic worked and Santa arrived along with the Mayor and his special little helper, Hannah Gonzalez Ruiz, who began the traditional countdown. With the plunger duly pressed, on came the myriad of festive lights!

It was an exceptional day with good weather, lots of visitors with plenty of market stalls offering a variety of Christmas treats and goodies. Stamford’s Artisan Guild, offering handcrafted goods at the Arts Centre added to the magic and sparkle of the Christmas spirit.

So, thank you all so very much again and I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, successful new year.
