Police received information from Hertfordshire police about 30 possible immigrants in the back of a French lorry, travelling north on the M11.

A total of 27 men were arrested for immigration offences. Five were taken to the King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre and 22 were taken to Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough.

The driver of the lorry, a 54-year-old man from Dover, was arrested on suspicion of facilitating immigration and has been bailed to return to Thorpe Wood Police Station on August 17.

The 26 people in the back of the lorry have been released from police custody with no further action and 19 have been taken to a reception centre run by Home Office Immigration Enforcement officials.

The seven teenagers have been placed into care by Peterborough City Council.

A spokesman for Peterborough City Council said: “If nobody is exercising parental responsibility it is a requirement of local authorities to look after children according to the Children Act 1989.

“Children are supported in the care system to the age of 18. But each case is unique and our social workers will continue to work with the children to ensure their wellbeing.

“Recruiting and retaining foster carers is one of our main priorities.” Interested in becoming a foster carer?
