A mother has launched a petition calling for new traffic safety measures after her young children were almost hit by a car outside a school.

Jenny Pace was walking her boys Benjamin, five, and Timothy, four, to Bourne Westfield Primary Academy when the near miss happened.

They turned a corner Saxon Way onto Kingsley Avenue and were faced by a car driving toward them on the pavement. The road was blocked by a car going in the other direction in one lane and parked cars in the other.

“It really shocked me,” said Jenny. “I was very upset. There were just so many what ifs.

“What if my boys had decided to run round that corner? If you’re driving it’s very difficult to see a little child up close.”

Jenny already had concerns about safety around the school, but the near miss prompted her to take action. She set up a petition on change.org calling for three things:

○ For the roads around Westfield to be made one-way.

○ For keep-clear zig-zags to be painted on the road outside the school.

○ For a pedestrian gate to be installed in Kingsley Avenue.

The petition so far has 181 signatures. Jenny hopes to get enough support from parents to encourage both Lincolnshire County Council and Bourne Town Council to consider her proposals and improve safety.

The county council’s area highways manager Kevin Brumfield said: “We are aware that the streets around Bourne Westfield are getting congested, especially at the end of the school day.

“The school already has a clearly marked school safety zone, and we’d appeal to parents to park safely further away from school, and walk just for a couple of minutes to collect their children.

“By parking in the school safety zone they are posing a risk to children and other road users, as well as causing inconvenience to nearby residents.”

The petition is online at change.org.
