Store is closing its doors

A VILLAGE store will close its doors for the final time tomorrow after an expensive fight to keep it open.

Rippingale Stores owner Simon Deane said he could no longer afford to plough on with keeping the shop alive and has decided to shut up shop.

He took on the store, which also included the village post office, nearly two years ago and said: "I have suffered thousands of pounds worth of losses just this year."

The post office had been threatened with closure just six weeks after he bought the shop, on the same premises where he lives with his nine-year-old daughter Pippa.

The closure announcement was officially made in autumn 2007.

A campaign was launched as a result of the closure threat by the Friends of Rippingale Post Office.

Mr Deane said: "This helped me stay open for another year, but in January this year it closed and the outreach service was implemented which I then took on.

"This meant a substantial loss in income and I cannot not afford to get by on the income I make from the shop, because it doesn't make a lot.

"I can't afford to do it anymore."
