A couple are preparing to hold their annual charity coffee morning in memory of their son.

Dr Michael and Margaret McGregor have been organising events in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research for more than 30 years and have so far raised £94,896.

The cause is close to the couple’s heart as their son John battled leukaemia and died in 1985.

This year’s event will take place at Bourne Corn Exchange from 10am to 1pm on Thursday, November 27. Admission is £1, which includes a tea or coffee and a mince pie.

Last year’s coffee morning was a huge success, raising about £4,000. More than 400 people attended and there were queues outside the door 45 minutes before the start of the event, which as well as refreshments, included a variety of stalls and games.

Dr McGregor said he did not expect to hit the £100,000 mark this year, but that it might be reached next year.

“It would be a fantastic milestone to hit,” he said.

“It has still been very worthwhile doing, and that’s what matters - that we are still rasing a useful sum.

“There is no doubt that there have been advances in treatment. It’s being refined so it is less distressing to the patient.

“Knowing that makes raising funds worthwhile.”
