A service of celebration for the life of Maurice Smith, of St Peter’s Street, Stamford, took place at Marholm Crematorium, Nicola Dela-Croix officiating.

Donations were made to the RNLI and Aspire (spinal injury).

Mr Smith died at Peterborough City Hospital, aged 84.

He was the son of Hattie and Frederick Smith of Wetherden, Suffolk and was educated at Wetherden Primary School, and Lord Wandsworth College, Hampshire.

After working at the Havillands Aircraft Company as a draughtsman, he served with the RAF from 1951 - 1975 as a navigator, working mostly on Canberras, reaching the rank of Flt Lt. He then became a senior scientific officer with the Civil Service before working at Peterborough Technical College in the IT department.

He was a member of St Peter’s Community Group. A keen swimmer, he regularly swam at Stamford Pool, and for many years until recently did sponsored swims for Aspire. His interests included calligraphy, Italian and ballroom dancing.

Widower of Thirza, he leaves his daughters Ginny and Mandy.
