Teenagers broke into club to take alcohol

A teenager broke into Deepings Rugby Club and stole £40 worth of alcohol because he wanted to carry on drinking, magistrates heard.

Jobless Liam Sleight (18), of Black Prince Avenue, Market Deeping, was drunk when he burgled the Deeping St James clubhouse on August 6 with a 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Both were ordered to pay 105 compensation to the club after admitting burglary charges during a hearing on Monday, at Bourne Magistrates Court.

Club president Pete Ward hopes that the sentencing shows that the Deeping St James clubhouse is not a soft touch.

He said: "Hopefully it sends out the message that we have improved our security and we are prepared to take it as far as we can in any case that comes up.

"It is a shame that these things happen. That was our third burglary in the space of two months. We are a charity and we provide facilities for the youngsters of the area."

Prosecutor Mrs Lisa Fell told the hearing that a club member was called out at 3.10am after the alarm at the club went off.

She said that en-route the member stopped and spoke to four people drinking alcohol, who ran away from him. He found the club had been broken into.

Mrs Fell said that a footprint was found on the bar and CCTV footage caught Sleight handing alcohol to someone out of shot.

She also said that the other teenager's fingerprints were found at the scene.

The bench heard that 40 worth of alcohol was stolen and a damaged window latch had to be repaired costing 170.

In mitigation, Mr Christopher Pye-Smith said Sleight put the offence down to being drunk and that he wanted to get more alcohol.

He said that the other teenager became involved by going to see what Sleight was doing and that the incident was not pre-planned.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge on Sleight while the other teenager was given a nine-month referral order. They were also ordered to pay 30 costs.

Both are paying compensation at the rate of 10 per fornight.
