Skaters could wait two years for park

SKATEBOARDERS could face a wait of at least two years for a new skatepark in Bourne because of fears over health and safety.

The Dimension Skatepark Committee, which wants to build a skatepark on the Recreation Ground in Recreation Road, had hoped to get a lease of at least 21 years from South Kesteven District Council.

But since it removed the dilapidated skatepark in Stamford more than a year ago, the district council is looking at lease applications more carefully.

Vice-chairman of the committee Graeme Parrott, who is also a police community support officer, said that at the

moment the project was

"stagnant".

He said: "I think we are still a few years away from having a permanent skatepark in Bourne but I am quite

convinced we will get one eventually.

"We are waiting for the land to be made available to the town council. It is a long wait for the land but if someone was to offer us a suitable piece of land that would speed things along."

Officer Parrott said the district council hadn't indicated they were in a position to release the land yet.

He added: "It is not something that is going to happen over night."

He believes the district council was considering sub-letting the Recreation Ground to Bourne Town Council.

The committee needs a lease of at least 21 years to secure grants of 50,000 from Wren, also known as Waste Recycling Environmental, and 30,000 from the Len Pick Trust.

The overal cost of the

project is expected to be about 130,000.

The police are working with South Kesteven District

Council on a summer

programme of activities for youngsters and hope to get a mobile skatepark.

Officer Parrott said the

mobile skatepark would not replace a permanent one but hoped it would encourage

people in the town to see the benefits of having a skate-park. The skatepark, which has been in the pipeline for five years, has already received financial backing from Bourne Town Council, the mayoral fund of 2003/04, the police and Bourne Salads.

A spokesman for the district council was unavailable for comment.
