School's out as teachers strike

MORE than 300 Bourne and Deepings pupils were forced to stay at home as teachers went on strike in protest over pay.

Two hundred students at Bourne Robert Manning College and 114 youngsters at Deeping St James Community Primary School were affected by the National Union of Teachers’ (NUT) dispute yesterday.

Five teachers at Robert Manning College joined a rally in Peterborough, meaning year seven students were unable to attend school.

Principal Laurence Reilly said: “We have been able to run the college as normal but with the exception of year seven students. The strike has affected just over 200 out of almost 1,200 students.

“This restriction was due to health and safety considerations, bearing in mind the teaching commitments of striking colleagues.”

Robert Manning part-time drama and media teacher Rachel Kaufman joined the rally in Peterborough.

She said: “We are striking for fair pay because the increase for teachers does not meet the rate of inflation.”

Mr Reilly said exams scheduled for yesterday were unaffected by strike action.

He added: “Parents were warned more than two weeks ago that the disruption was likely to be greater than it turned out to be as the numbers taking industrial action were not made known to me until after the recent holiday.

“Our GCSE art examination, year ten examinations in mathematics and English and continued preparation for the forthcoming year nine SATs will all take place as planned.”

Headteacher Pat Eccles, of Deeping St James Community Primary School, said strike action meant 114 children had to stay at home.

She said on Wednesday: “Around 40 per cent of our children in four classes won’t be in school but we will be open and running as usual.”
