Playarea curfew to beat the yobs

YOBS are being warned to think twice about vandalising a playground when it reopens after being closed for six months.

The Elsea Park Community Trust is hoping to prevent a repeat of last year's vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the playground between Springback Way and The Pollards by locking it up every night.

Last summer residents living near the park complained about groups of youths hanging around there until the early hours of the morning.

The area was closed six months ago after a swing's frame was pulled out of the ground. Graffiti was also sprayed around the area.

Estate developer, The Kier Group, has now installed a 6ft fence and carried out repairs and the playarea will be reopened soon.

The community trust, which is made up of representatives including residents, councillors and developers, are charged with managing the estate, which has four playareas.

Trust chairman Tony Prior, of Springback Way, will be in charge of locking the play ground each night and has a stern warning for the yobs.

He said; "The message is clear – we have closed it once because of vandalism and misuse of the playground and if it happens again it will be closed again.

"It is a playarea for children and it is meant to be part of the estate.

"The playground should be open all the time but teenagers can't behave themselves at night. There were complaints of kids being there at 2am last summer. Last year they were screaming and shouting at the top of their voices, six or seven of them on a big swing.

"If they can't look after these things they will be locked away from them."

Mr Prior said that residents had complained last year to the police about the problems and said officers had visited the area several times.

Police were also called to the estate in February after a vandals sprayed graffiti on road signs.

Abusive daubings were found on signs on a roundabout, a postbox, a slide and pathway. Offensive words were also sprayed on the wall of a pensioner's home.
