More light shed on Bourne pub’s history thanks to appeal

A BUSINESSWOMAN has uncovered more information about the history of a pub which she is turning into a health and beauty salon.

Claire Saunders started refurbishing The Marquis of Granby in Abbey Road, Bourne, towards the end of last year - with the aim of relocating her ReNU business to the building in summer.

While peeling back the old wallpaper and floorboards she came across several clues to the building’s past with writing on the wall.

She was able to track down one of its former landlords Brian Hubbert who shed some light on the history of the building in the 1960s, but Claire appealed for people to come forward if they knew anything more.

The team at ReNU were particularly keen to trace Ron Fowler and Ron Hunt, whose names were also found on the wall and labelled as organist and barman.

Claire was in luck and has been contacted by Ron Fowler’s family following her appeal.

Claire said: “I was thrilled to get such a great response. What I found about about Ron Fowler is that it has been 43 years since he died aged 38, leaving behind two small children.

“I also found out that Ron used to play in a band called The Mortones.”

Ron’s sister Mavis Cooke, 77, of Edinburgh Crescent, Bourne, was delighted to hear that her brother’s name had been found on the wall in the pub, bringing back fond memories of him.

She said he regulary played the organ at the pub and added: “It was nice for my family to find out about this discovery.”

Claire hopes to put together a booklet or folder with pictures and information detailing the history she has discovered for people to read about it when they come to have a treatment at ReNU.

She said: “If we don’t record theses things, they get lost and buried and the newer generation will not know anything about any of this.”

The name J Stubley also appears on the wall there and was signed April 17, 1947.

Other people living in the area have also provided Claire with information.
