Match kicks off in memory of Shaun
A football match in memory of Bourne's Shaun Porter will take place on Sunday at the Abbey Lawn.
Shaun was 32 when he died earlier this year in an industrial accident and two teams will kick off for a memorial trophy at 2pm.
Neil Oglesbee, a friend of Shaun’s for more than 12 years and who has helped organise the game, said: “I don’t think Shaun realised how popular he was.
“Shaun loved football, whether watching or playing, and was a big Liverpool fan.”
Sunday’s teams will be Swinstead Swifts Old Boys, which was the last team Shaun played for and which has specially re-formed after two years for the game, against a team of regulars from The Red Lion pub.
Neil, who will play for the Swinstead team, said: “We hope to do this every year for him.
“I was very close to him and every team I have played for Shaun has been there with me, including Morton Reserves, Thurlby, Morton Colts and Warners, to name a few.”
Shaun’s parents are sponsoring the match ball and the trophy will be provided by Trackline, Shaun’s most recent employer.
Entry for spectators is free but donations can be made at the match to Shaun’s parents’ chosen charity – the British Heart Foundation.
In the evening there will be a sports quiz at The Nag’s Head, Bourne, from 7.30pm.
