Have your say about Bourne town centre

RESIDENTS can play a vital role in plans to change the shape of Bourne's town centre by having their say.

South Kesteven District Council wants the community to put forward their views on the dramatically reduced scheme for the redevelopment at an event at a stall at Bourne Market.

The plans which will now cost between 4m and 5m instead of 27m, include developing a series of shops, restaurants and flats in the Wherry's Lane area.

District council leader Linda Neal is urging people to turn out to the event which is on Thursday from 10am until 2pm.

She said it was important people come along because it is an opportunity to see what the council is proposing and for members of the community to offer their feedback.

"It is vital because it will influence what we do in the town centre," said Coun Neal.

Mayor of Bourne Pet Moisey agreed, saying: "This development is for the benefit of townsfolk which is why people should go along next Thursday."

District council strategic director Ian Yates is confident about the new plans which were revealed last month.

He said: "We have a proposal which we feel builds on the positive existing characteristics of the town and are keen to gauge public opinion."

People from groups and organisations have been invited by the council's consultation team and anyone who cannot make the market can go along to the Darby and Joan Hall in South Street where further consultation work will take place from 6.30pm on the same day.

The council says that this new project is more feasible in the current economic climate and it is hoped it will be completed in the next three years.

Larkfleet Homes managing director Karl Hick added: "As a major employer with our head office in Bourne we are delighted with a scheme which can help to maintain and improve the town centre."
