Fire destroys £35,000 of funfair equipment
A BUSINESSMAN who suffered the agony of watching thousands of pounds worth of equipment go in up in flames says it was a nightmare.
Harrison Naylor, 34, and his family called out firefighters at 10am on Monday after flames sparked by a pump at Fairground View, in Stamford Road, Bourne, set two garages alight.
Mr Naylor, who lives with his mum Alfreda, sister Florence, 24, brother Ernest, 19, and four children, said the main thing is that no-one was hurt, but added: "I have lost too much to mention."
Police cordoned off the A6121 between Bourne and Toft as firefighters from Bourne, Stamford, Corby Glen and Billingborough battled the blaze for two hours.
The fire destroyed the garages and their contents and damaged three lorries. The cost of replacing the damaged equipment is thought to be 35,000. The flames also damaged a pile of timber logs and a shed.
Mr Naylor, his family and friends rallied to save as much equipment as they could for the firm, which has been running for about 100 years.
They saved the waltzers but a set of traditional swing boats was destroyed, along with stalls, five generators, bouncy castle equipment and much more.
Mr Naylor said: "It is a nightmare but it can all be replaced. The main thing is that everyone was kept safe.
"The heat from the fire was intense. I saw fireballs coming from the flames which went 45ft up in the air."
Mr Naylor said: "We have lost a lot of memories too as a lot of the stuff was sentimental and had been passed down from my grandad."
From April to November Mr Naylor works away with his fair, but he had returned home for a few days.
Now he will stay to clear up the mess and sort out his insurance.
He said: "It could be about 18 months before my claim comes through but I have to keep going with what has been saved from the fire as it is our livelihood.
"We're just lucky we didn't lose everything."
