Fines warning to drivers over free parking at centre

DRIVERS are being called upon to stick to time limits on free parking at Bourne's Burghley Centre car park.

The calls come in the wake of Anglia Co-operative's announcement of a move into the former Budgens store at the centre in North Street - and have been backed by Bourne's traders' chief.

The new Anglia Co-operative foodstore in Bourne will open on October 20 and chief executive John Chillcott said people need to stick to the timescale they are allowed to park for, so customers can get to and from the store easily.

He said: "Currently shoppers can park free for three hours, and people must be aware that enforcement of this will mean fines for over-staying the free period."

Bourne Business Chamber chairman Kevin Hicks said the foodstore is going to generate more passing business for traders in Bourne – and they're delighted by that.

He added "However, limited free parking for shoppers must be enforced if we are going to have a sufficient turnover of parking spaces for the extra people coming into town.

"Otherwise we'll have a car park used by commuters who go elsewhere all day and nowhere for the shoppers to park.

"If we don't have a turnover of parking spaces, and shoppers have nowhere to park, they'll go elsewhere. The foodstore and other shops in the centre will suffer as a result."

There are currently more than 100 spaces providing free parking for three hours, with a fine of 70 for motorists breaking this time limit.

The car park is managed by Euro Car Parks, which also manages Sainsbury's in Exeter Street, Bourne.

Mr Chilcott said there are future plans to reduce the time limit in the Burghley Centre car park to two hours.

The former Budgens store has been empty since March 2008. Anglia Co-operative's Rainbow store from Manning Road will close and reopen as Co-operative Food at its new site. All 73 staff will keep their jobs.
