Community centre gets donation from Lincolnshire County councillors

A COMMUNITY centre received a welcome boost as councillors donated £500.

Lincolnshire County councillors Sue Woolley (Con) and Charlotte Farquharson (Con) gave £250 each to the Bourne Arts and Community Trust which runs Wake House in North Street, Bourne.

The money came from the Councillor Big Society Fund which was introduced after councillors decided to freeze their allowance budgets until 2013.

Wake House provides space and acts as a hub for more than 40 groups and organisations around the town.

Greg Cejer is one of the nine Wake House trustees. He said the money couldn’t have come at a better time as the building’s boiler broke down just before Christmas.

He said: “It is a nice handy contribution to keep the place warm during the winter.

“I was pleased to hear Couns Woolley and Farquharson were supporting an organisation that facilitates activities for more than 40 groups in the town. They have been extremely supportive.”

Coun Woolley, who represents the Bourne Abbey ward, said: “Wake House is incredible.

“We were very fortunate to be given a tour of the building and we saw everything that was going on.

“It really does cover such a wide range of community groups. It is a good thing to support and we want to see it keep going so they can be a focal point in the town.”

Coun Farquharson, who represents the Bourne Castle ward, said the sheer range of groups who call the building home was reason enough to donate.

She said: “The trust covers an awful lot of organisations for the town and it needs our support.”

Wake House is home to a wide range of cultural and educational organisations ranging from tap dancing for youngsters to bridge clubs. It also houses a number of alternative therapy businesses and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Mr Cejer added: “Wake House is thriving. A lot of people are using the building. Some use it every day, some use it once a month.

“It is all done on a voluntary basis.

“We have nine trustees who are all doing it because we believe in providing services for the town.”

Wake House may be well-used but the trustees are always looking for financial support and volunteers.

Mr Cejer said: “It is well supported by the users but if we are going to improve the building we are going to need donations.”
