It is easy to forget that newspapers have readers of all ages and all interests and for some the first page they turn to is the cartoons.

Bourne Academy pupil Jacob Vanhof is one of those readers and thought The Local was in need of some cartoons so contacted us with his creations.

Jacob’s passion for animation was sparked by a visit to his primary school, Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, from The Beano cartoonist Kev F Sutherland.

Using techniques taught to him that day in Kev’s comic art masterclass, Jacob created, Jimmy - who shares a few similarities with his creator.

Jacob says Jimmy is a bit like one of his favourite cartoon characters Garfield, although not a cat.

Jacob has his own studio set up at his grandparents’ house where he works on his cartoons.

His family play a big role in his productions, with Grandma helping with story ideas and spelling, grandad with setting up the equipment and his uncle with editing the videos.

Even brother Leo, 4 and Harvey, 8, help build the backdrops for the videos,

However Jacob is not just an illustrator but an animator in all media, taking inspiration from Wallace and Grommit to make his own stop-gap animation using a Morph doll he was given for last year.

Jacob said: “I could make a film like Wallace and Grommit but I would have to go to Grandma’s everyday for years.”

This year his productions have stepped up a notch, using a camcorder he was given for Christmas to produce stop-gap films using Lego figures.

Earlier this week Jacob had be transfixed by the dvd extras of Disney’s classic animated film Dumbo - watching with huge interest to understand the painstaking process of producing a feature film.

Jacob said: “I like to watch the Disney films, not for the stories, but to see how they make them.”

One of Jacob’s biggest inspiration actually comes much closer to him.

His father Scott is a welding fabricator and has to produce drawings for his work and instilled an appreciation for the skill.
