Bourne MP praises town schools in his maiden Commons speech

SCHOOLS in Bourne have been praised in the House of Commons as a beacon for education in this country.

The town's MP Nick Boles (Con), made his maiden speech on Tuesday and highlighted The Robert Manning College and Bourne Grammar School as an example to the rest of the country.

In his speech to other MPs, Mr Boles said: "North-east of Stamford is Bourne, a small town that boasts two great secondary schools, The Robert Manning College and Bourne Grammar School.

"Together, they demonstrate that selective education, where it is well established and accepted by parents, can provide children of all abilities with superb teaching."

Mr Boles also added his delight at Secretary for Education Michael Gove's decision to allow selective schools to apply for academy status dependent on Ofsted results.

He said afterwards: "Being an academy gives the governing body and teachers more control over money spent on them by the local education authority.

"It treats the teachers as the grown ups they are and gives them more responsibility."

Mr Boles also highlighted The Robert Manning College as a school that successfully uses different levels of teaching to achieve the best results.

He added: "Robert Manning works for all of its pupils and should be used as an example for state schools around the country."

Robert Manning principal Laurence Reilly was thrilled with the acclaim.

He said: "I am delighted by the kind words about The Robert Manning College expressed by Nick Boles. We remain unsure about the changes to the educational system that lie ahead, but can guarantee that the college will continue to offer a quality education for local children."
