Bourne Grammar School takes more pupils than ever

An over-subscribed grammar school has been able to accept all prospective pupils for the first time in years after getting permission to expand.

Bourne Grammar School sent out 203 letters of acceptance today to every pupil who passed the 11-plus exam and opted for the school as their first choice.

In the past the school has had to turn away pupils wanting to attend because of a cap on its intake.

Headteacher Jonathan Maddox said: “We are delighted. It means that we will be able to offer parents and pupils the choice of coming to our school and getting a grammar school education.

“We are going to open a new facility in time for Easter and we have got plenty of accommodation to house everyone who wants to come here.

“The Government’s intention is that successful schools should be able to
grow to take as many pupils that want to go there.”

A series of building projects to expand the school’s capacity have taken place in the last 12 months.

Four new classrooms and enlarging a suite of English and science classrooms was completed last year.

A new block to accommodate a systems and control department, where next generation electronics and design technology will be taught, will open by Easter.

The school’s intake has increased by 30. However the issue raised some concern at a Stamford Town Council meeting on Tuesday.

Councillors feared there would be a drain of academic talent out of Stamford with pupils opting for Bourne Grammar over Stamford Queen Eleanor School and Casterton Business and Enterprise College.

Lincolnshire county councillor and Stamford town councillor John Hicks (Ind) reported the situation to the town councillors.

Many councillors queried how many of the places would be taken by Stamford pupils but Coun Hicks said he did not have a breakdown.

Coun Hicks said: “There could be a real problem with people migrating to Bourne.”

In response, Mr Maddox said: “I’m not forcing anyone to come here, it is the parents’ and pupils’ choice, but we are now in a position to offer everyone a place, which is good news.”
