Appeal for ‘50s items for Queen’s jubilee exhibition in Bourne
CLOTHES, shoes, games and other memorabilia from the 1950s are needed for a new exhibition.
Brenda and Jim Jones, of Bourne Civic Society, are hoping to run an exhibition at Baldock’s Mill in South Street, Bourne, to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
Mrs Jones, of Stephenson Way, Bourne, hopes people can help by donating or lending clothes, accessories, old photographs or anything else they think might be relevant to the display.
She said: “Following on from the success of our wedding exhibition for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton last year, we decided to organise another one to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.”
Mrs Jones, who is chairman of the civic society, is really excited about putting the new exhibition together.
She said: “We already have our mannequins from last year, so we are just needing clothes to dress them, among other bits and pieces for the display.
“We will be pleased of any clothing, whether it is men’s, women’s or children’s.
“Back in the fifties the women wore things like blouses without any sleeves and big flared skirts, and the Teddy Boy style was big too.
“Any items like that would be gratefully received.”
Mrs Jones had a great response from the community last year, with many people searching items and loaning them to the mill for the wedding exhibition.
She hopes people will be just as helpful this year and added: “If people could have a rummage in their lofts and see what they have up there, that would be fantastic.”
The exhibition will start at the end of May, with an exact date yet to be confirmed, in time for the national celebration on June 5 to honour the 60-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
It will run for a few weeks - with the heritage centre open at weekends as usual - and during the week - from 2pm until 4pm.
Mrs Jones said it is important to celebrate the occasion.
She said: “Our Queen has been excellent during her time on the throne so far.
“Jim met her when he received his MBE and we will never forget that day.”
Entry will be free but donations are welcome.
Mrs Jones said any items loaned to the society, which runs the heritage centre, would be treated with great care.
Anyone who can donate or lend items can call Brenda on 01778 424740.
