Why so determined to fell healthy trees?
SAFEGUARDING wildlife and wild places by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust over the past 60 years is not disputed; in fact Dole Wood became a trust managed nature reserve due to the Wildlife Trust's impressive conservation record.
The felling of healthy mature trees in Dole Wood to meet Natural England's Site of Special Scientific Interest targets is however a major concern.
Not only will trees be felled next winter but, if any oak seedlings establish over the next five years, more trees will be felled.
Natural England determines the management policy of SSSIs. The Wildlife Trust quite rightly, seeks advice and funding from government agencies, but with that comes an obligation to follow the advice.
Village residents have not been consulted, or informed, of any management plans, this is why by raising a petition local people have an opportunity to express their opposition to tree felling.
Why are the Wildlife Trust and government agencies so determined to cut down the trees?
Even the experts admit that felling the trees may not lead to regeneration.
Fortunately time is on our side, the need for the young trees has been identified, and there is no need for felling.
The ancient trees can be left to grow to maturity.
Acorns can be planted in the SSSI and allowed to establish.
Meanwhile oaks and small leaved limes can be propagated in the new reserve.
Dole Wood is part of the local distinctiveness of Thurlby.
It is special and should be judged and managed on its merits - not as part of blanket government policy.
