Time will tell over expansion
Regarding the incipient expansion of Bourne Grammar School, it remains to be seen whether such expansion in numbers will lead to a dilution of attainment.
Perhaps in the 10-year time-frame which Education Secretary Michael Gove is reportedly talking about, established comprehensives will be doing better than the expanded grammar schools.
Where I used to live, in the West Country, the local ex-secondary modern is now one of the best schools in the county and the ex‑grammar school (which I had attended) is now one of the worst, it does happen.
It is not fanciful to suppose that Bourne Academy and The Deepings School might come to equal or even surpass Bourne Grammar School – they are both excellent schools.
The cliché‑writers must have known something to suggest that if it ain’t broke, why fix it.
Perhaps parents of pupils placed around 170 in the grammar school pecking-order might feel that they are better off sending their children elsewhere.
Or perhaps, to paraphrase JM Keynes, in the 10-year time-frame, Mr Gove will be dead.
