Paying patrols is not answer

REGARDING the story in last week's The Local, "39p a day" for a private alternative to the police force - what a crazy idea!

Such a payment would amount to 140 a year per household.

If it were proposed to add 140 to the annual council tax that would trigger many objections, but might just possibly be agreed if used entirely to increase the local police budget. Spending such a sum merely upon the very limited services that might be provided by a private, profit-making company would be utter madness.
