Mayoral chain repair work should be done in Bourne

The mayoral chain is many years old, it is of considerable monetary value, of great beauty and is part of a great tradition and heritage.

The wearer of the chain is immaterial – the respect, pride and prestige of such a chain is the office it represents. This chain belongs to Bourne town and has done for many decades.

Of course from time to time it needs refurbishment and alterations, not frugally done, but quality deserving of its worth. This should be done if possible within Bourne itself.

We have reputable jewellers of many years' standing. There is no possible excuse for this work to be done elsewhere without first getting quotes from Bourne. Bourne Town Council asks us to buy in Bourne, quite rightly so.

They should do likewise and for once set a good example.

I am saddened to know that one councillor disapproves of money being spent on this chain, charities could use this money better. She does not appear to realise that charities will always be with us.

Perhaps a course on Bourne's history and heritage for all aspiring councillors would be appropriate.

Personal respect has to be earned while the mayoral chain demands respect by the very significance of its office alone. Should this councillor ever become town mayor I hope she will understand the privilege and honour of such a position, knowing that the chain is not merely a necklet worn in self- gratification.

Bourne has been served in decades past and present by many worthy mayors of all political persuasions, dedicated to the well-being of Bourne.

Perhaps on this one occasion in these dire times, all the town councillors might share the shortfall of needed money between them. What a noble and generous gesture it would be.
