Letters to The Local - 9 July 2010

Letters to The Local published on 9th July 2010.

Too late to protect book shops

After reporting a couple of minor points in the planning application for the new Tesco, I've received a letter detailing the conditions imposed on Tesco, in order for it to be granted planning permission.

There is one I don't understand, and I was wondering if the council could explain it to me.

It is this: No more than 2,129 sq m of the new sales floorspace shall be used for the sale of convenience shopping goods including everyday essentials including food, drinks, newspapers, magazines and confectionery.

The remaining 684 sq m of net sales floorspace shall only be used for the sale of comparison shopping goods including clothing, electrical goods, books, toys, entertainment media, kitchenware and hardware.

Reason: To protect the viability and vitality of the nearby shopping centre.

How does "forcing" Tesco to sell products other than food, protect Bourne town centre?

Limiting what Tesco sells would do be better, for example, if you say Tesco can not sell books, then this protects the Bourne book shop.

Of course you need to say the same to Sainsbury's as well, so I fear it's too late to stop them selling books, to protect the town's book shop.

Dance was a success

Bourne celebrated Armed Forces Day in the Corn Exchange on Friday, June 25, with a dinner/dance in the evening in 1940s style with the entertainment provided by The Spitfire Ball.

In the afternoon a tea dance was laid on for the young over 50s.

Those who attended seemed to enjoy themselves and enjoyed the oldies' music.

Many of those who attended in the evening took time to dress up in the 1940 style outfits.

There were present day uniforms, yesterday's uniforms, Dad's Army, Land Army, ARP Wardens and other outfits.

The black pencil stocking seams were also on show.

The mayor Pet Moisey together with the committee chairman's wife Maureen Butler drew the raffle.

Ted and Dot Kelby assisted by Alan Jones ran the tombola stall.

The buffet was provided by Andy of The Red Lion – very good food too.

Cadets from Bourne detachment gave valuable assistance throughout the evening.

An excellent bar at low prices was provided by the Corn Exchange manager Ian Bland and his wife.

Thanks also to Peter the caretaker at the Burghley Centre for his help.

The committee would like to thank Harrison & Dunn and The Local for selling the dance tickets and to everyone who gave prizes for the raffle and tombola.

More support would be nice next year as it would make all the difference.

We the committee welcome anyone who would like to join the committee. You do not have to be ex-service. Ring 01778 393814.

Profits, if any, from the night are going to Blesma. All prizewinners will be notified by telephone.
